Warning before you scroll: This is a post about a butcher shop in bellingham, the contents therefore contain raw meat.
After working too many long hours and unpredictable schedules for "The Man" my friend and butcher Chad Johnson decided to carve his own path (get it?). He set out to create his own shop in the small Northwest town of Bellingham, WA.
Around March of 2013 Chad put his idea in motion and launched a kickstarter for Carne, the soon to be butcher shop. The idea of a local, old fashioned craft butchery caught like wild fire around the city of Bellingham, WA. By the end of the campaign he had raised over $17,000; more than double the initial goal.
Carne Bellingham is on a mission to create a sustainable system of eating meat in Bellingham. By sourcing locally from farmers in the Pacific Northwest, Chad and his shop are able to provide grass fed beef and other natural meats from healthy animals; not those pumped full of antibiotics and corn. With this local food system in place, farmers from the area also have a direct avenue of putting their product into a home.
As with many independent small businesses, its tough for a local butcher shop to compete with the mega marts and grocery chains around the area. As a locally sourced butchery the avenues of acquiring the right kinds of meat for the shop are difficult and not well planned. The educational aspect of showing people in the community the difference in quality of meats and where that meat came from is another of Carne's ambitions.
Is flat out delicious. Carne Bellingham also provides a variety of house made sausages that can only be found at their shop! I'm so proud of my friend Chad and the shop that he's opened. If you find your self in Bellingham, WA be sure to stop by and tell him I sent you (no, you won't get any discounts).
